Nibali gives Italy first Milano-Sanremo win since 2006

Vincenzo Nibali is the first Italian rider to win Milano-Sanremo since Filippo Pozzato in 2006.

He’s also the first rider since Fabian Cancellara to win two consecutive monuments. The Swiss won Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix in 2013.

Nibali has now won the 4 major races in Italy: Giro d’Italia, Giro di Lombardia, Milano-Sanremo and Tirreno-Adriatico. Only Francesco Moser and Giuseppe Saronni also achieved this.

Nibali is the first Grand Tour winner since Sean Kelly in 1992 to win Milano-Sanremo and the first Tour winner since Laurent Fignon in 1989.

The gap of twelve years between Filippo Pozzato and Vincenzo Nibali to win Milano-Sanremo for Italy is the longest gap since 1970, when Michele Dancelli took the win after 17 years without Italian victory in La Primavera.
